“Gioia bella Luce Tu sei scesa dall’Elisio…”

The most debated theme was the one of immigration. Here we present the complimentary and contrasting views expressed by Maltese youths as they discuss this current but often sidelined issue. Although young people are often troubled and nervy when faced with particularly sensitive and controversial issues, well-structured small focus groups tend to bring out the best participative and argumentative skills in youths as they strive to share their ideas and experiences with their peers.(more)(less)

Do we know other member states of the EU well enough? Do we get enough information about other EU member states? I think that Lithuania is still regardedDo we know other member states of the EU well enough? Do we get enough information about other EU member states?
I think that Lithuania is still regarded as “second-rate” in the EU. Our students think that Lithuania is not under-developed, but when you meet and talk to someone, they still think we are part of Russia. Other nations of the EU don’t even know we exist at all. Some people in Spain we are still in the Soviet Union. And in text books and maps of other countries they still have Lithuania as part of the Soviet Union, but not as a separate independent state.
Being a part of the EU could help to prove other nations we are an independent country, which is doing its best to be good at sports, science doing well in developing new technologies etc. The respondents think that there’s still a gap of information about new member states in other EU countries. Children in schools of Lithuania get knowledge and information about history and geography of all the nations of the world, while other countries mostly concentrate on the history of their own.
Mūsų šalies mokyklose mokoma viso pasaulio istorija, o kitose šalyse mokiniai mokosi daugiau tik savo šalies istoriją.(more)(less)

He says that people have had the chance to express their feelings and that there has been a genuine citizens' participation. The European Commission in the next wave of Plan D projects will develop the internet component and will adopt an internet strategy very soon, so he thinks that Radio Web Europe has been a very interesting project because it opened the way for the development of citizens' participation on the internet.(more)(less)

He thinks that an important step has been taken: for the first time, in a very deliberate way, the EU institutions went out to find its Europeans and the Europeans responded. And it is a big message for the future.

For centuries Europe was plagued by wars and divisions. But in the last 50 years or so, the countries of this old continent have at last been coming togetherFor centuries Europe was plagued by wars and divisions. But in the last 50 years or so, the countries of this old continent have at last been coming together in peace, friendship and unity, to work for a better Europe and a better world.
We Europeans belong to many different countries, with different languages, traditions, customs and beliefs. Yet we belong together, like a big family, for all sorts of reasons. Here are some of them.
• We have shared this continent for thousands of years.
• Our languages are often related to one another.
• Our traditions, customs and festivals often have the same origins.
• We share and enjoy the beautiful music and art, and the many plays and stories, that people from all over Europe have given us, down the centuries.
• Almost everyone in Europe believes in things like fair play, neighbourliness, freedom to have your own opinions, respect for each other and caring for people in need.
• The common market is one of the European Union’s greatest achievements. Restrictions between member countries on trade and free competition have gradually been eliminated, with the result that standards of living have increased.
So we enjoy what’s different and special about our own country and region, but we also enjoy what we have in common as Europeans:
