She says that a big problem was the lack of clear information about the provisions of the constitution, which made it difficult to vote ‘yes’ in a positive way. She is also concerned about issues at a local scale, and says that many people were worried that Brussels would have more say over local decisions. She doesn’t know about the provisions of the Treaty, even though many people say it’s the same as the constitution. She thinks that every country should have a referendum, because it’s the most direct form of democracy.(more)(less)

Maaike, a student from Holland, says that the main reasons were that many people think Europe needs a strong and central voice to operate effectively on a global scale. Many students of economics and business voted yes because they thought it was important to ensure Europe’s position in the world marketplace.(more)(less)

He is against the idea of codified constitutions in principle, and says that in the EU, the rules we live by should come from the domestic governments of individual member states. He thinks that the EU should be a framework for countries to coexist more easily, and that this should be achieved by diplomacy: “if the EU’s going to work, it will be by people wanting it to work, not forcing it to work”. With the Treaty, he sees the two main issues for the UK as being a loss of sovereignty, and the further erosion of powers of Parliament in law making. He thinks that, in principle, the UK should have a referendum on the Treaty, but that it would inevitably be rejected, so it would waste a lot of resources to go through the process.(more)(less)

Constitution is the main document or law of every state. European Union is not a state in the traditional sense, and because of this a lot of discussionsConstitution is the main document or law of every state. European Union is not a state in the traditional sense, and because of this a lot of discussions arise- whether we need a Constitution of the EU at all. And if yes, then what it should be like? What main aspects and regulations should be included in it? It is natural for many Europeans to worry about the possibility of the ES Constitution replacing their National Constitutions. Nevertheless, to my deep belief, their fears are unsubstantiated. Each country in the EU is a sovereign state, free and independent to deal with its inner affairs and problems. Each country keeps its own Constitution, even after the EU Constitution has been adopted. I think that all member states should sit down and discuss all the aspects that are most important to them on the EU level.
Konstitucija

Prof. Peter Serracino Inglott was the Maltese Government's representative on the Convention for the Future of Europe. He was the only representative to be also a member of the clergy. We ask him if and how should God be mentioned in the EU Constitution. He replies that while God is not explicitly mentioned He is present in the constitution. God's presence is manifested in the Human Ideal that the constitution puts forward, in the ideals of Solidarity, and Brotherhood that Europe values. While hidden, God is already manifest in the proposed text for the constitution.(more)(less)

Prof. Peter Serracino Inglott was the Maltese Government's representative on the Convention for the Future of Europe. We ask him if the EU Constitution is as extinct as a dinosaur or a seed that still needs to grow. He tells us that there is a need to revitalise the ideals of the Union in view of the new context the the EU finds itself in today. The proposed Constitution has sown the seed of that something, that text, that can create an enthusiasm in European Ideals. But the document as it is today, as volumes of laws and cryptic statements, is a monster that is as dead as the dinosaurs.(more)(less)
