Stem cells are cells which can differentiate into several kinds of cells, and can also indefinitely renew and divide themselves. A source of non-embryonic stem cells is umbilical cord blood, which contains large concentrations of haematopoietic stem cells, besides mesenquimal stem cells and endothelial stem/progenitor cells. These neonatal stem cells may be collected and processed soon after birth, in a process that is totally safe and painless to both mother and child. These cells have a wide therapeutic application.
Besides stem cell cryopreservation, Crioestaminal is involved in several research projects aimed at expanding the field of application of stem cell : Instituto de Medicina Molecular, Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa, Instituto Superior Técnico, etc.
